City of Dublin Named Eco-Friendly Suburb

(Dublin, Ohio) — Solar Insure recently listed The City of Dublin as one of the nation’s most eco-friendly suburbs. The solar energy company conducted a nationwide survey, asking participants what suburbs they would move to for an eco-friendly lifestyle. Dublin was ranked first place for Central Ohio and No. 56 in the nation. Dublin’s title as an eco-friendly suburb is attributed to its mission to become the most sustainable global city of choice.

The City offers residents, businesses and visitors various recycling and sustainable options, including curbside recycling and yard waste collection. Residents can recycle other items at the City of Dublin Service Center. Those include:

Dublin also boasts 150 miles of shared use pathways, is accredited as a Runner Friendly Community by the Road Runners Club of America and a Silver-Level Bike-Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists. Residents and visitors can safely bike, walk or run to their destination, promoting green transportation options.

Sustainable Saturday in the spring is a prime example of the community’s engagement. At this drive-through event, guests drop off household hazardous waste, personal documents for shredding, prescription drugs, Goodwill donations and other recycling items. In 2024, around 1,400 vehicles participated in Sustainable Saturday, diverting 41.8 tons of material from landfills. Those who cannot attend this event have alternative options to recycle their items. Interested parties with documents for shredding can attend the fall Document Destruction Day, dispose of household hazardous waste at SWACO’s HHW collection facility, drop off prescription drugs using the Dublin Police Department’s medication drop box and Goodwill donations at the Sawmill Road location.

The City itself practices green initiatives; each City of Dublin building and electric vehicle charging station is powered by 100% renewable energy. The City’s fleet is comprised of 13 electric vehicles, including the addition of a new electric box truck. Dublin works closely with Rumpke Waste & Recycling and SWACO to promote correct recycling practices.

With a goal to host greener events, the City has introduced many green alternatives. During the Dublin Irish Festival, solar-powered light towers, alternative fuel generators and best recycling practices are used. Additionally, a contractor sorts all waste to help improve the diversion rate.

The City of Dublin looks forward to continuing our quest as a sustainable global city of choice in the new year. For a list of sustainable initiatives and services, visit DublinOhioUSA.gov/city-services/.
